Mazatlàn Much Needed Rest

We got off the ferry around 11:00 am and headed for the Palms resort at the beach close to "new Mazatlán".  Apple maps was giving me directions and said it would be 14 minutes.  So 1 hour later we arrived at the resort, completely drenched from sweat.  It was super hot (~40C) and we were in stop and go traffic for most of it.  The navigation was trying to get me to go the wrong way down one way streets on 3 separate occasions.  Add to it that I was turned around and it became a really frustrating experience.

We got a room in Mazatlán for 3 nights to let tropical storm Manuel die down. It hit close to the end of the day with lots of rain.  We were taking an open air taxi for a tour around old Mazatlán and the town  center.  It cost $20 CDN and took about 1 hour.  I thought we were getting the history and good tips on what to do here, but the taxi driver was too busy darting into and out of traffic and calling other drivers loco to tell us much.  He did stop at a sculpture of dolphins and tell us it was a sculpture of dolphins and similar story for sculptures of fishermen and a motorcycle cop (wow! Great info). Later we heard how the sculpture of the motorcycle cop was the hero of Mazatlán and had a really cool story.  Too bad we didn't get that on our tour. And to top it off, Karen got drenched in the back seat because the rain was coming down in buckets, even though Jorge, our driver, kept saying it was only poquito (a little bit).

Back to the hotel. We got locked parking for our bikes, on the tennis courts (I guess this is their only secure parking place.  I'm not sure what happens if we want to play tennis.

The hotel is very nice, but fairly small and not busy at all right now. It was great to hit the ocean and pool before the storm came in just to cool down.  The pool overlooks the ocean, so it is like the pool goes on forever.  Although since it is not all inclusive, the initial drinks at the pool bar were pretty pricey. Oh well, we needed it after the traffic of the morning.  The room is clean, the pool is nice and we can walk to shopping and restaurants.  The beds are hard though and meals are expensive here. But we don't want to drive in the rain if we can avoid it and we really needed to get some laundry done.

So this is the best that maps can produce for our route yesterday.  In reality we took the ferry from La Paz to Mazatlán.

Downtown Mazatlán before the storm really hit, although you can see the clouds forming in the background.
